PRESIDENTS OF THE 1960S
Dwight D. Eisenhower
34th president of the United States from 1953 until 1961. Richard Nixon was the vice president during Eisenhower's presidency. Eisenhower's accomplishments were: He sponsored and signed the civil rights bill, signed the federal Aid Highway Act, Balanced the budget three times, ended the Korean War, and kept America at peace. His failures were: he failed to improved the plight of American Farmer, failed to moderate the republican party, failed to denounce Senator Joswph McCarthy, and failed to defuse the Cold war. Eisenhower was an effective leader because he was a very good and intelligent administrator that had good foreign and domestic policies.
John Fitzgerald Kennedy
John F. Kennedy was of the 35th president of the United States. He started his term in 1961 until his death in 1963. Lyndon B. Johnson was vice president during JFK presidency. Kennedy was a Democrat. The failures of JFK were: Bay of Pigs because Castro stayed in power in Cuba, unable to get welfare programs and civil rights act passed. His Successes was the Nuclear Test ban Treaty, establishment of peace corps and prevented big steel from raising prices excessively. John F. Kennedy was an effective president because he avoided nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis, he inspired our country and encouraged voulunteerism and created the Peace Corps.
Lyndon Baines Johnson
Johnson was the 36th president of the United States. He served his presidential term with Hubert Humphrey from 1963-1969. Some of his successes included the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Gun Control Act of 1968, and Social Security Act of 1965. He was successful in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 because it outlawed discrimination by employers against African Americans and Women. Johnson was less successful in his foreign policy. His decisions on the Vietnam War made him hated among many americans. Johnson was responsible for designing the Great Society; that included laws that upheld civil rights, public broadcasting, medicare, and medicaid. Although Johnson had alot of bills passed the vietnam war was his down fall.
Richard Nixon
37th president of the United States. He served his term with Spiro Angew and Gerald Ford as vice presidents. Nixon served from 1969-1974. During the 1960s one of his major successes was the National Environmental Policy Act. Some of Nixons failures included the Watergate Scandal, Vietnam, CIA destabilization of Cambodian Prince, and politicizing abortion. Nixon was non effective, he was the only president that resigned so that he wouldnt have to face embarrassment of imminent impeachment due to the Watergate scandal.
